Six Metrics that Matter
Major Donor Weekend
One of the strategic services Veritus Group offers to its clients is
major donor file analysis. This analysis measures how well you are managing your donors. When presented with the results of our audits, most often, clients are shocked to learn that they are losing donors and dollars at an alarming rate.
And, they are in good company, since most not-for-profits, are losing over 40% of their major donor value each year, many of them without even knowing it is happening.
Because of its extensive research, Veritus Goup has accumulated significant information on how other organizations are doing in this area. Here are the value attrition benchmarks of 33 national organizations.

Here is how to read this chart. The cume giving column is the level of donor giving per year. If you take all the donors that gave $1000 cume in their first year and analyzed how they performed in all the following years you will see that, in the case of these 33 national organizations, 58.62% were lost in the first year, 45.83% in the second year and 61.45% in the third year.
These are very serious losses. In many cases millions of dollars are simply going away.
Veritus Group, at no cost to you, will take your major gift file and analyze how your major donors are doing. This is not only a good way to check on the health of your file, it is a great evaluation tool for how your major donor program – how your major gift officers – are performing.
When you agree to go through this analysis, here is what we will ask you to do and what you will receive in return.
First, we will ask you to give us some donor file information. Next, we will do the analysis and give you a detailed report on how your donors are performing. You will be able to see exactly where the losses are and which donors went away. You will also receive a summary of your file’s performance that will look like this sample, although in much more detail. This will give you the specific information you need to take action.
We do this analysis free of any cost or obligation to accomplish two things. We want you to see how your major donor program is doing. And, we want to make a case for how we can help you.
